Bottle Feeding Orphan Shih Tzu Puppies

By Connie Limon

Nursing bottles for orphaned Shih Tzu puppies can be obtained through the veterinarian, pet supplier, wholesale catalogs or the internet. You should purchase several nipple styles to see which works best for you and your Shih Tzu.

Shih Tzu puppies can become colicky just like human newborn babies. Be careful about allowing a Shih Tzu puppy to ingest air when either tube or bottle feeding. Always turn the bottle and nipple end down, before offering it to the Shih Tzu puppy. All the air in the bottle will rise to the solid end. When the Shih Tzu puppy is nursing freely bubbles rise in the bottle. The bubble flow should be fairly rapid, small and uniform in size, rising in even response to the Shih Tzu puppy's nursing. If the bubbles are large the Shih Tzu puppy may also be ingesting air. Check the nipple cap.

Occasionally remove the bottle from the Shih Tzu puppy's mouth to allow a return passage of air back into the bottle. A return passage of air occurs either through turning the bottle upright or by momentarily loosening the cap. Do not abruptly pull the bottle from the Shih Tzu puppy's mouth. Place a finger in the corner of the Shih Tzu puppy's lip to break the nursing hold.
Some Shih Tzu puppies may instinctively resist the unnatural feel of a manufactured nipple. 1. If the dam is available, rub the bottle and nipple and a towel over her mammaries. 2. Drape this towel across your stomach and lap. 3. Hold the puppy on your lap against your abdomen. 4. Express a small amount of formula from the bottle and wipe it over the nipple. 5. As you introduce the bottle's nipple to the Shih Tzu puppy's mouth, move your legs slightly, jiggling your lap. 6. Also jiggle the bottle up and down in the puppy's mouth using tiny motions. The movements re-create the dam's breathing and Shih Tzu puppy's nursing position on the dam that should cause the Shih Tzu puppy to instinctively and reflexively latch onto the nipple. 7. Have lots of patience.

You will need to burp the bottle fed Shih Tzu puppy after each feeding. Do not allow the Shih Tzu puppy to nurse the bottle dry to avoid a colicky baby. You can burp your Shih Tzu puppy the same as you would a newborn human baby on your shoulder with gentle pats and rubs between the shoulder blades.

Newborn Shih Tzu Puppies and Early Surroundings

By Connie Limon

Shih Tzu puppies begin to make noises shortly after their eyes open. They will also begin to try and get up and waddle around the whelping box at this time. Between 3 and 4 weeks you might want to provide new Shih Tzu puppies with a new safe daytime area for extra stimulation. A new larger area physically stimulates and mentally challenges newborn Shih Tzu puppies. Be sure the new area has good footing. Before this time the Shih Tzu dam may protest about moving her offspring. At about 3 or 4 weeks, however, usually the Shih Tzu dam will agree to a new spot. The dog's earliest ancestors that were related to the wolf actually utilized several den sites. The first den was used for whelping. The second den was always larger to provide the offspring with safe areas of exploration. Once Shih Tzu puppies are large enough to clamber out of the whelping box, they need an area large enough to clearly define sleeping, eating, playing and toilet areas.

If you are using your garage or basement to raise Shih Tzu puppies please check for conditions that can be dangerous or lethal. Stairwells can cause fatality if Shih Tzu puppies explore them and fall. Trapped ammonia fumes from urine are toxic. Heating systems, electrical panels and appliances require thorough checking before placing a litter nearby. A garage should be thoroughly cleaned. Physical objects, cleaning abrasives, stored gasoline, motor oil or paint must be removed.

A safe play area can be created by using a garage's side door to the yard. Block the areas under and around the door from cold and dam drafts. Flooring should have a firm, no slippery surface.

Line your whelping box with clean soft blankets or towels in the beginning. If carpeting is used, it should be washable. Do not use indoor/outdoor carpeting. Manufacturing chemicals can react with urine. Use of these materials can cause burns to the bodies of Shih Tzu puppies. Do not use newspapers in the whelping box. Newspapers are slick and contain chemicals used in the ink. Do not use wood shavings in the whelping box. Wood shavings can be inhaled or ingested which also can cause fatalities.

When Shih Tzu puppies begin to move around inside the box, house-training can be stimulated by separating the whelping box into two areas, sleeping and eliminating. Even very young Shih Tzu puppies do not like to eliminate where they sleep, eat and play. Within a few days, puppies learn to move away from their sleeping area to eliminate. Use removable sides in the whelping box to encourage them to sleep in the whelping box and eliminating away from it. If you use a heat lamp, use it only in the sleeping and playing areas.

The Shih Tzu dam will require an area to close to her Shih Tzu puppies but a place where she can relax away from them.

Healthy Shih Tzu puppies will sleep on top of each other. Once out of the whelping box an small airline crate with the door removed makes an effective dog house for Shih Tzu puppies to rest and sleep with each other. This early use of an airline crate provides the new owner with several advantages. The newly arrived Shih Tzu puppy readily accepts the familiar airline crate as sleeping quarters, making the adjustment to a new home less traumatic.

The Shih Tzu: Common Health Issues

by Don Krnel

Although disease affects all different breeds of dog, certain breeds are more prone to certain ailments than others, due to their particular anatomical structure, genetic make-up, or other factors. In this article, we will briefly describe some of the most common ailments that affect the Shih Tzu.
Eyes and Ears: Because of the anatomical structure of the Shih Tzu's head, their eyes are especially vulnerable to being injured. This can be caused by collisions with foreign objects, encounters with other animals, rough play, etc. Eye injuries are probably the most avoidable of all ailments that affect the Shih Tzu and can be prevented to a large degree by providing a safe environment for the dog to play in, with special care taken to removal of potentially injurious objects. Shih Tzu should always be supervised when interacting with other animals and should discouraged from rough play. Another important preventive measure is to keep the eyes and eye area as clean as possible. Avoid allowing crustiness or dirt to accumulate. When grooming, it is recommended that the hair covering the eye area be left at a reasonable length as it protects the eyes from dirt and debris.
A genetically linked disease that often affects the Shih Tzu is Progressive Retinal Atrophy, or PRA. PRA is basically the de generation of the retina and retinal tissue over time and can lead to blindness at an early age. If a dog is suspected of having PRA, veterinary care should be provided. As PRA is an inheritable disease, dogs that suffer from the affliction should not be bred.
Shih Tzu are also very susceptible to ear infections. Ear infections are generally not serious and can be treated easily by a veterinarian. Some preventive methods include keeping the inside of the ears immaculately clean and free of hair and other debris.
Bones, Joints, and Internal Organs: Another genetically linked disease that affects ShihTzu is Hip Dysplasia. Hip Dysplasia is a degenerative disease that affects the function of the ball-and-socket joint of the hip. This can be an extremely debilitating disease and cannot always be corrected by surgery. Dogs suffering from Hip Dysplasia should not be bred.
Renal Dysplasia is an inherited disease that affects normal kidney function which, in turn, affects the overall health of the dog. Although Renal Dysplasia is more prevalent in older dogs, it can also affect young puppies and in some cases, can be fatal. Dog with Renal Dysplasia should not be part of any breeding program.
Other Concerns: Just as in humans, some Shih Tzu suffer from abnormal thyroid function. This can be treated with medication prescribed by a veterinarian, although the dog may have need of the medication for the entirety of their lives.
Shih Tzu also seem to be prone to certain types of allergies including food allergies, flea allergies, and hypersensitivity to environmental substances. This can lead to any number of secondary ailments, such as irritated skin, hair loss, and overall poor health. Allergy testing can be performed by a veterinarian and can be treated with medication.

Shih Tzu Puppy And Dog Information

by Mitch Endick

The Shih Tzu is a small and lively dog that makes and excellent watch dog. They are beautiful little dogs that generally get along well with other dogs and other pets. They love older children but should be socialized with them. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Shih Tzu is 8 to 11 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 8 to 15 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Shih Tzu is no exception. Be on the look out for genetic kidney disease, slipped stifles and teeth problems. Their large eyes can also be injured or irritated. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Shih Tzu has a double coat. The inner coat is soft and wooly. The outer coat is long and flowing with some having a slight wave. She should be brushed daily. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.
Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.
*Life Span. The Shih Tzu can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*History. The Shih Tzu come from Tibet where they were used as a family pet. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1969.
Some Registries: *American Shih Tzu Club *UKC United Kennel Club *NKC National Kennel Club *CKC Continental Kennel Club *APRI Americas Pet Registry Inc. *AKC American Kennel Club *FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale *NZKC New Zealand Kennel Club *KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain *ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club *ACR = American Canine Registry
Litter Size: 2 to 4 Shih Tzu puppies
Category: Toy
Terms To Describe: Loyal, alert, lively, sturdy, arrogant, friendly, outgoing, happy, affectionate
*SPECIAL GOOD POINTS Makes a good watch dog. Good dog for allergy sufferer.
*SPECIAL BAD POINTS They can snore. Can gain weight fast. Can be stubborn. Makes a poor guard dog. May be difficult to housebreak.
*Other Names Known By: Lion Dog, Chrysanthemum Dog,
*Every dog is an individual so not everything in this information may be correct for your dog. This information is meant as a good faith guideline only.

Shih Tzu Standard # 2

A black and white Shih Tzu.

The AKC Shih Tzu breed standard calls for the dog to have a short snout, large eyes, and a palm-like tail that waves above its torso. The ideal Standard Shih Tzu height at withers is 9 to 10 1/2 inches. The dog should stand no less than 8 inches and not more than 11 inches tall. The Shih Tzu should never be so high stationed as to appear leggy, nor so low stationed as to appear dumpy or squatty. Regardless of size or gender, the Shih Tzu should always be solid and compact, and carry good weight and substance.
The Imperial Shih Tzu Club calls for the Imperial to stay under 9 pounds and are highly desired because of this weight variation. The Imperial Shih Tzu was the parent of the Shih tzu and cherished by Royalty and most pet owners today because of the ease of caring them and are called the portable Imperial Shih Tzu.
James E. Mumford described the breed in an American Shih Tzu magazine, giving a picture of the versatile character of the Shih Tzu: "Nobody knows how the Ancient Eunuchs managed to mix together…And now here comes the recipe: A dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man (Chinese), a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, a dash of teddy bear and the rest dogs of Tibetan and Chinese origin."
Although generally outgoing and friendly, the Shih Tzu definitely has an attitude that cries to be spoiled. However, poorly bred dogs of the breed can be excitable, noisy, and snappy. Shih Tzus will almost literally do anything for food and look for any kind of chance to eat something other than just dog food. Though Shih Tzu are generally good with children, they become easily jealous of babies and toddlers. Poorly bred ones may snap if bothered by rambunctious children. Well-bred Shih Tzu are, as the Breed Standard calls for, affectionate to all people and should never show aggression to people or children. Because they are small, they can be injured by small children, and therefore are better suited for older children, particularly those who enjoy combing his hair.
Shih Tzus are intelligent, and can be trained for obedience competitions and for good manners around the home. They can be stubborn, so persistence and consistency are definite pluses in training methods. Punishment makes this dog shut down, so training should also be low-key and motivational.

Health
The Shih Tzu or lion dog is a long lived and fairly healthy breed, but there are a few health conditions that are known to affect the dog. Health issues include entropion, portacaval shunt, renal dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), patellar luxation, and trichiasis. Shih Tzus typically live between 11 and 14 years.

Shih Tzu Standard # 3

History
The Shih Tzu has been around for a long time. The Shih Tzu was bred to sit around the palace of the Emperor of China and bark when people or animals approached: this is allegedly to alert people to the presence of unwanted visitors. It is believed that this ornamental breed was created by breeding the Bei-jing gou (Pekingese) with a Tibetan dog breed, the Lhasa Apso. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog. The Shih Tzu is also known as the Chinese/Tibetan Lion Dog or the Chrysanthemum Dog.It is called the chrysanthemum dog because it's face looks very much like the flower. In 1994, the Shih Tzu became the 12th most popular breed of dog in the AKC's 139 breeds with more than 37,000 new individuals.

American and European Shih Tzu
There are differences between the American and European Shih Tzu The FCI standard, which is used in Europe, And then the AKC standard.
